The Isolation Booth Project

The Issue

There is a need to preserve personal protective equipment (PPE) but also a need to efficiently isolate healthcare workers (HCW) from the possible sick patient. The development and use of a separating structure can reduce the need for PPE.

In the setting of an epidemic, there is a need for walk through booths in highly populated areas, such as those built in parts of the world where epidemics have been more apparent (Asia).

On a daily basis in an epidemic setting, HCWs require multiple contact with persons under investigation (PUIs). For the purposes of testing, contact requires the HCW to swab the PUI.

Therefore in an effort to do this safely, a PPE structure, such as a booth, will need to meet these requirements:

  1. The front of the booth should have a window with plexiglass/Lexan that separates the PUI from a HCW. All the other parts of the walls do not need plexiglass because of the cost of it, it can be made cheaper with smooth sheets, such as PVC, that can be cleaned with disinfectant.
  2. There is no need for an intercom, PUI should be able use their phones.
  3. The door should be opened with the patient’s foot or have a mechanism to open and close with the foot only, and be easily cleaned.
  4. The framing of the booth should not be made from lumber if it can be helped, because of the difficulty of cleaning.
  5. The top should be able to easily be cut, in order to create and opening for a duct for air cycling out of the booth.

This is the Bill of Materials for the booth.
